Internet search giant Google wants to wire every house, office, and business in the United States with fiber optic cable. It transmits data about 100 times faster than the fastest broadband cable service. So, it’s started a new division: Google Fiber.

Kansas City is Google Fiber’s first test city… wiring over 7,000 miles of fiber optic cable. To unspool 7,000 miles of fiber optic cable, you’d need to walk across the width of the U.S. almost three times.

Imagine 7,000 miles’ worth of cable for every major American city… the scale of the project is enormous. Goldman Sachs estimates fiber is at least a $140-billion communications revolution.
