From Mark Ford, editor, Creating Wealth: This month, I found a notice from the government in the mail. It said I’m eligible for Medicare.

I’ve always turned up my nose at Medicare because I saw it as a government handout. And I am not a person who takes handouts.

But, as I’ve recently learned from Retirement Insider Editor Bob Irish, Medicare isn’t a handout. Like Social Security, it’s a retirement benefit that I’ve already paid for and have every right to use.

Bob should know. In the past month, he’s written four excellent essays on Medicare, all of which I’ve found to be (a) important, (b) informative, and (c) very easy to understand.

If you are 64 or older (or have parents of that vintage), you should read them. The investment of your time will be minimal. The reward, in terms of dollars saved and benefits received, could be significant.

For starters, you will discover:

  • The four decisions you must make before you enroll.

  • How to choose the policy that’s right for you.

  • How to navigate deductibles and coinsurance.

So far, we’ve published three of Bob’s essays in Retirement Insider. Subscribers can access them here:

Medicare Part II

Medicare Part III

You’ve got an important seven-month window around the time of your 65th birthday. Choosing the wrong options then could cost you thousands in late penalties… so take the time to investigate and prepare.

Reeves’ Note: If you’re afraid you may be missing out on benefits you’ve paid into—and are owed back from—“the system,” our friends at Bonner and Partners have a book you may want to read.

Harvard Ph.D. and former Reagan advisor Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff just wrote Get What’s Yours: The Secrets to Maxing Out Your Social Security. In it, Kotlikoff explains how to boost your monthly Social Security income by up to $1,620. You can buy the book for less than half its list price on Amazon.com, right here.
