Two expert hackers just destroyed this reporter’s online life. Here’s what he learned from the experience…

  1. Use a virtual private network (VPN).
  2. Vet suspicious websites with urlquery.net.
  3. Use Little Snitch to monitor your computer’s outgoing communications.
  4. Hover over links before clicking them. Make sure the address matches the URL you’re trying to visit.
  5. Turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you leave the house.
  6. Switch to a complex passcode for your phone (instead of four digits).
  7. Turn on full disk encryption.
  8. Instruct your cable/telephone/Internet service provider (ISP) not to give out your information to anyone who can’t supply a predesignated pin.
  9. Make your social media accounts private.
  10. Use fake answers for security questions (so others can’t guess them).
