Mark Ford

From Mark Ford, founder, Palm Beach Research Group: Here’s something you can do to exponentially improve your career.

It will take some time to achieve completely—but the benefits will start coming to you immediately.

And there are several benefits: money, prestige, and personal satisfaction.

Become a master in your field.

It’s a bold objective… but it’s possible.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Identify the most important things to know (knowledge) and skills to have (things you have to be able to do) to be in the top 1%.
  2. Read voraciously. Do it efficiently and regularly. Since you have a narrow focus (only what is most important), you can probably learn at least one important thing by reading 30 minutes a day.

Focus on books, articles, and essays that pertain to your industry—primarily the “how-to” pieces. Give preference to authors who’ve done it themselves as opposed to academics and/or journalists.

  3. Supplement your reading by going to seminars and attending conferences. Again, be selective. Pay attention. Take notes.
  4. Take meaningful correspondence courses. There are good home-study programs for just about everything today. Find one that seems to meet your needs. Try it. If you aren’t happy, ask for a refund.
  5. Seek the advice of experts—both people you know and people you don’t. Write personal notes. Send emails. Call for interviews.
  6. Study the competition—especially companies that are growing. If a competitor is doing well, you can assume he knows at least one important thing about your business that you don’t. Do whatever it takes to learn his secret.
  7. Network. The more people you know, the better chance you’ll have of finding someone to solve every one of your problems. A big network is also a steady source of opportunity.
  8. Be generous with your growing knowledge. When people learn that you’re happy to answer their questions and solve their problems, they will be more likely to come to you with opportunities.
  9. Write and give speeches. Be open to giving speeches and writing articles for industry media. Start small by limiting the content to what you know well. As your knowledge increases, you can broaden the scope.
  10. Write a blog—again, a small one to start—and allow it to develop naturally. Ask and answer questions. Be helpful.
  11. Write a book. After a year or so of writing a blog, you might have enough material to write a book. Who knows, it could be a business best-seller!
